The climate and weather conditions in Azerbaijan vary significantly depending on the region, terrain, and season. It is important to prepare according to the areas you plan to visit and the time of year.

  • During the summer months, bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun.

  • If you are visiting mountainous areas, bring warm clothing, comfortable hiking shoes, and a waterproof jacket.

  • Weather conditions in the mountains can change rapidly. Even during summer, temperatures can drop in high-altitude areas.

  • Strong winds are common in Baku during winter. Therefore, choose warm and windproof clothing.

  • Travel insurance is highly recommended.

  • Azerbaijan mainly uses Type C and Type F electrical sockets. The standard electricity supply is 220 V at 50 Hz.

  • You can purchase a local SIM card or obtain a compatible eSIM in Azerbaijan.

4. Weather in Azerbaijan and the Best Time to Visit

Azerbaijan's geographical location and varied terrain create a wide range of climatic conditions. As a result, different regions of the country may experience different weather conditions at the same time.

Spring (March–May)

This is the season when nature comes back to life, mountains turn green, and flowers begin to bloom. It is an ideal time for cultural tours, village visits, and trekking at lower elevations.

Summer (June–August)

This is one of the best seasons for mountaineering, climbing high peaks, trekking, camping, and nature tours. Summer in the Greater Caucasus Mountains offers excellent opportunities for visitors interested in outdoor adventures.

For those interested in climbing high mountain peaks during the summer season, the Bazarduzu Summit Tour (4,466 m) can be an exciting option.

Autumn (September–November)

This season offers relatively mild weather, colourful forests, and favourable conditions for cultural tours. September and October can also be ideal months for mountain hiking.

Winter (December–February)

This is a suitable season for winter tourism, skiing, snowboarding, enjoying snowy landscapes, and mountain getaways. Shahdag and Tufandag are among the country's main winter tourism destinations.

Choosing the right season according to your travel interests will make your experience more enjoyable and comfortable.

5. Money and Payments

The official currency of Azerbaijan is the Azerbaijani manat (AZN).

  • Bank cards are accepted at most large restaurants, hotels, and shopping centres.

  • You may need cash at small shops, in villages, and in remote areas.

  • Use banks and official currency exchange offices to exchange money.

  • Do not exchange money with strangers on the street.

  • ATMs are mainly available in cities and larger towns.

  • Check with your bank in advance to make sure your bank card can be used for transactions abroad.

  • Tipping in restaurants is not mandatory. Check whether a service charge has already been included in the bill.

6. Transportation and Getting Around

Various means of transportation are available in Azerbaijan, particularly in Baku.

  • You can use mobile apps such as Bolt to book taxis in Baku.

  • Check the fare in the app before booking a taxi. If you take a taxi directly from the street, agree on the fare in advance.

  • The Baku Metro is a convenient and affordable means of transportation. A BakuKart is required to use the metro.

  • City buses are also part of the extensive public transportation network.

  • Use pedestrian crossings and be careful when crossing the road.

  • Before renting a car, check whether your driving licence is recognised in Azerbaijan, whether an International Driving Permit is required, and what insurance conditions apply.

  • For intercity travel, you can use buses, trains, or private cars.

  • When travelling to mountainous and remote areas, take road conditions and seasonal restrictions into account.

  • Never drive after consuming alcohol. When drinking alcohol in public places, respect local regulations and standards of public behaviour.

  • Observe speed limits and always wear your seat belt. Speed cameras are installed on many roads in Azerbaijan. Fines apply for traffic violations.

  • You can purchase a local SIM card or obtain a compatible eSIM in Azerbaijan. You can also use mobile services provided by operators such as Nar and Bakcell.

  • Mobile coverage and internet access are widely available in cities, but the signal may be weak or completely unavailable in remote mountainous areas.

  • Save important addresses, hotel details, and contact numbers on your phone.

In villages and remote areas, café culture is not as widespread as it is in cities. People in these areas often prefer spending time together around a traditional tea table.

Before visiting a restaurant, check the menu and prices. Ask whether a service charge is included in the bill. If you have any food allergies or special dietary requirements, inform the restaurant staff in advance.
