This manifesto encourages climbers to respect nature, assess risks properly, and maintain team spirit. Prepared by the UIAA, this document is a key reference source for the development of mountaineering culture and the promotion of safe expeditions.

Mountaineer Manifesto | UIAA

The Climber’s Manifesto is a declaration of principles prepared by the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA). The purpose of the manifesto is to promote safe and responsible climbing practices, as well as to ensure that climbers respect the natural environment and the communities they visit.

The manifesto covers 10 principles: environmental responsibility, respect for local communities, and commitment to safety and proper training. It also emphasizes the importance of preserving the natural beauty and wilderness of climbing areas, encouraging climbers to take an active role in promoting sustainable practices and protecting endangered species.

UIAA also provides resources and training programs to help climbers develop the skills and knowledge needed to climb safely and responsibly. These include courses on avalanche safety, first aid, and rock climbing techniques, as well as programs that promote responsible tourism and community development in mountainous regions around the world.

Overall, the Climber’s Manifesto represents a commitment to ethical and sustainable climbing practices and reminds climbers of their responsibility to respect and protect the natural world.

In 2015, UIAA published the Climber’s Manifesto Declaration. This concept includes ten key pledges for climbers. The project covers various aspects of mountain ethics – from leaving no trace to respect, and from sharing skills to passing on knowledge:

The 10 Principles of the Climber

  1. I will remember the necessity of protecting the mountain environment.

  2. While climbing, I will strive to leave no trace on the rock or mountainside. On bolted routes, I will respect the rock and minimize my impact by following local agreements, ethics, and values.

  3. I will always take back what I bring with me.

  4. I will respect the culture and lifestyle of the people living in the mountains and valleys I visit.

  5. I will act responsibly within the cultural norms of society and the laws of the countries I visit.

  6. I will climb clean, accept fair play, and follow all anti-doping rules related to me and my sport.

  7. I will help others in need, even if it means not reaching the summit or achieving my personal goals.

  8. I will use and climb with certified climbing equipment within my technical abilities.

  9. I will respect other climbers: greet them on the mountain, share my technical knowledge, and consider their viewpoints.

  10. I will climb with consideration for other alpinists.
