December 11 – International Mountain Day

Every year on December 11, International Mountain Day is celebrated worldwide. This day was confirmed following the UN General Assembly’s declaration of 2002 as the “International Year of Mountains” and has been observed globally since 2003. The purpose is to highlight the vital importance of mountains for humanity, draw attention to the challenges they face, and support mountain communities.

Mountains are the primary source of the planet’s water resources, host half of the world’s biodiversity, and are home to the livelihoods, cultures, and economic activities of millions of people.
