Overview
Mount Elbrus is located 11 kilometers from the northern border of Georgia, within the borders of the Kabardino-Balkarian Autonomous Republic of Russia. It boasts two summits: the "West" (5642 m) and the "East" (5621 m), with a distance of 1500 meters between them. Mount Elbrus is the highest peak in Russia and Europe, making it one of the sought-after summits for climbers aiming to conquer the highest peaks on seven continents. Technically, Mount Elbrus is not a difficult mountain to climb. However, it is subject to harsh and unpredictable weather conditions, which often hinder summit attempts. The classic climbing route starts from the south, from the village of Azau. The first ascent to the 5621-meter East summit was achieved on July 22, 1829, by Hyssa Khachirov from the Karachay people. The West summit, at 5642 meters, was first ascended on July 28, 1874, by a team led by the Swiss guide Peter Knubelin, accompanied by Frederik Gardiner, Florensiya Crauford, and Horace Walker.
