Azerbaijan is a leader in the world in terms of the number of mud volcanoes. It is impossible to feel the uniqueness of this interesting natural phenomenon without seeing it live. There are many mud volcanoes near Baku, considered one of the most unique natural phenomena in the world. Mud volcanoes are recognized by their frothy and sometimes eruptive appearance. Approximately 400 mud volcanoes have been recorded in our country. Although their size is smaller than regular volcanoes, they erupt more frequently. The diameter of mud volcanoes is maximum approximately 10 meters, and their height is up to 400 meters (the largest mud volcanoes in the world - Big Kanizadag and Toragay are located in Azerbaijan). Gobustan is one of the most famous must-see places in Azerbaijan and attracts over 1000 tourists annually. The rocks of Gobustan depict scenes of human, animal, collective labor, boat, combat, and hunting. The oldest rock art, created by carving, rubbing, engraving, and painting techniques, dates back to the prehistoric period of the 8th millennium BCE. The Roman inscription on the rocks dates back to the years 81-96 AD and consists of six lines. This indicates that the 12th Roman legion was present here during the reign of the Roman emperor Domitian.
