Overview
Beshbarmag Mountain is located in the Siyazan district of Azerbaijan, near the Caspian Sea. You can see the mountain, which rises 470 meters above sea level, while looking towards the Baku-Guba highway. The mountain is characterized by its solid rock and is one of the most famous mountains in the Caucasus, known for its mythical tales. It is a sacred place regularly visited by pilgrims, also known as the shrine of Khidir-Zinda. This shrine is quite famous in Azerbaijan, and some consider it a holy pilgrimage site. From the summit of the mountain, there is a beautiful view of the surrounding area and the Caspian Sea. In the III-VII centuries, during the period of the Sassanid Empire, defensive systems such as Beşbarmaq, later Gilgilchay, and then the Dagestan system were built to protect against nomadic tribes such as Massagets, Khazars, Huns, and Alans who attacked the Azerbaijani territory along the Caspian Sea coast. When viewed from the surrounding area, the mountain resembles a hand with five fingers.
