The mountain lies on the border between the Qusar and Quba districts, within the territory of Shahdag National Park. The peak is primarily composed of limestone and is formed by steep, sheer cliffs. Its name comes from the Azerbaijani words “qızıl” (gold) and “qaya” (rock). At sunrise or sunset, the mountain’s cliffs take on a reddish-golden hue, which inspired its name. Some local people also call the mountain “Günorta Mountain.” The foothills of Gizilqaya Mountain feature a highly colorful natural landscape. Although vegetation is sparse near the summit, the lower slopes are covered with alpine meadows, alpine flowers, and subalpine flora. The area is also home to representatives of the Caucasian mountain goat, brown bear, and other mountain fauna.

The main starting points for ascending the mountain are the villages of Laza in Qusar district and Khinaliq and Griz in Quba district. These villages are not only popular for hiking but also offer interesting opportunities to explore the local peoples with diverse languages and cultures. Along the route toward Khinaliq, the famous Atashgah (Fire Temple) at the mountain’s foothills is especially notable. This site, where natural gas has been burning for many years, is recognized internationally and reflects the traces of Azerbaijan’s ancient fire-worship culture. Gizilqaya Mountain is a magnificent peak that offers an unforgettable experience for both nature lovers and professional mountaineers.
