One of the most stunning trekking routes in Azerbaijan, the Alik – Haput – Khinalig – Galakhudat – Griz – Grizdehne route will take you deep into the heart of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, through ancient villages and trails that carry the traces of a mysterious history. Route Features

This trekking route connects some of the highest mountain villages in Azerbaijan. During the trek, you will cross the Khinalig and Gizil Gaya ranges, following the traces of ancient caravan roads at altitudes exceeding 2400 meters above sea level. Enchanting mountain landscapes, summer pastures, steep cliffs, and picturesque valleys will provide you with unforgettable moments throughout the journey.

Ancient Mountain Villages and Local Peoples

On this route, you will encounter different cultures and ethnic groups. For centuries, the high-mountain villages of the Greater Caucasus have been home to the Khinaligs, Griz people, Haputs, and Lezgins. Each of these peoples has its own distinct language, culture, and way of life.

Khinalig Village – One of the world's oldest and highest-altitude settlements. The Khinalig people have their own unique language, which is spoken only in Khinalig village.

Griz and Grizdehne Villages – Located in the heart of the mountains, the inhabitants of these villages speak the Griz language, and their history dates back hundreds of years.

Galakhudat – This village is inhabited by Azerbaijanis.

Haput Villages – These villages are home to an ethnic group belonging to the Shahdag language family, spoken by only a small number of people in this region.

Before joining the trekking tour, it is important to familiarize yourself with all the details of the tour. This is especially useful for those going on a mountain hike for the first time and helps prevent unexpected situations. Knowing in advance about the difficulty level of the route, the required equipment, the distance, and the weather conditions will help you move more comfortably and safely throughout the tour.

Travel Plan:

DAY 1: Baku - Haput - Khinaliq - Galakhudat

We depart from Baku to Alik village in Guba (4 hours). Upon arrival in Alik, we continue our journey to Haput village using 4x4 mountain vehicles. After reaching Haput, we take a lunch break and then start our trekking hike towards Khinaliq village. Along the way, we explore the historic streets of Haput village.

Our route continues along a gentle ascent until we reach the Haput-Khinaliq mountain pass. After crossing the pass, we will enjoy a magnificent view of many peaks of our country. We then continue our hike, cross the Gudyalchay river, and reach Khinaliq village.

After exploring Khinaliq, we drive to Galakhudat village, where we will stay overnight in village houses. After dinner, we discuss the details of the next day’s hike.

DAY 2: Galakhudat - Griz - Grizdehne Villages

After breakfast, we start our hike towards Griz village. We visit the Gur-Gur waterfall and continue our journey to Griz. After a lunch break, we continue hiking along the Eh trail towards Grizdehne village. We move along the Gudyalchay river, descend into the Grizdehne forest, and reach the village. After tea in Grizdehne, we return to Baku.
