This 6-day guided hike takes you to the most breathtaking part of the Greater Caucasus Mountains in Azerbaijan – the Transcaucasian Trail connecting the villages of Khinalug, Galakhudat, Griz, Laza, and Yergikek. 
You will experience the grandeur of the wild nature, ancient mountain culture, and the warm hospitality of local people along the way.

The tour begins in Khinalug Village (2,170 m), one of Azerbaijan’s oldest mountain settlements. Nestled in the Caucasus range, this village is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of the most fascinating cultural heritage centers of the Caucasus.

Next, you will hike along mountain trails through Galakhudat, Griz, Laza, and Yergikek villages, passing glacial valleys, river canyons, and alpine meadows.  Each day, you will be greeted by the tranquility of nature, the traditional lifestyle of mountain villages, and tables filled with freshly baked bread, cheese, and yogurt from local hosts.

During this journey, you will get an in-depth experience of both Azerbaijan’s northern mountain culture and the unique landscapes of the Transcaucasian Trail.  This tour is not only a nature adventure but also a cultural and culinary journey. At every step, feel the breath of the mountains and the warmth of the local people’s hearts at each stop.

Before joining the trekking tour, it is essential to familiarize yourself with all the details of the tour. This is especially useful for first-time hikers and helps prevent unexpected situations. Knowing the trail difficulty, required equipment, distance, and weather conditions in advance will make your journey safer and more comfortable.

Itinerary:

DAY 1: Arrival in Baku

Arrival at Heydar Aliyev International Airport and transfer to the hotel. The rest of the day is free for rest and exploring the city. Evening group meeting and "Welcome" dinner.

DAY 2: Baku → Quba → Khinalug

Depart from Baku in the morning towards the Greater Caucasus Mountains. Along the route, the greenery, apple orchards, and mountain landscapes of the Quba region accompany us. The main goal of the day is to reach Khinalug (2,170 m), one of the highest and oldest mountain villages in the Caucasus.

We take a short break and picnic lunch in the Qechresh forest, then ascend along the Gudyalchay valley. In the late afternoon, we arrive in Khinalug — with its narrow stone streets, ancient houses, and cliffs, this village is a living museum of Azerbaijani mountain culture. Dinner at a local family home, rest with mountain views, and overnight at Khinalug guesthouse.

DAY 3: Khinalug → Galakhudat → Griz Village

Today, an unforgettable hike from Khinalug to Griz Village in the heart of the Greater Caucasus awaits. The morning starts with exploring the narrow stone streets, ancient houses, and mountain community life of Khinalug. From there, we ascend towards Galakhudat — panoramic views of Tufandag and Gizilqaya peaks accompany us along the way.

In Galakhudat, we learn about local life and mountain architecture, then descend towards Griz Village along natural landscapes — waterfalls, alpine meadows, and the wild nature of the Caucasus. We visit Gur-Gur waterfall along the way before arriving in Griz. Griz is known for its beautiful scenery and warm hospitality. After exploring the historic sites, overnight at a guesthouse.

DAY 4: Griz → Mykhtoken Ridge → Laza

In the morning, we leave Griz Village and drive off-road to the base of Mykhtoken Mountain. We ascend the mountain trails on the southern slope of the Mykhtoken Ridge. Majestic peaks, valleys, and alpine meadows of the Caucasus accompany us along the way. During the hike on Mykhtoken Ridge, we closely observe the wild beauty of nature, alpine flowers, and mountain streams fed by glaciers.
Then, we descend towards Laza Village. Here, we explore narrow stone paths, ancient mountain houses, and stunning surroundings. During the Laza hike, waterfalls, panoramic views of the Caucasus, and alpine meadows offer participants an unforgettable experience. At the end of the day, relax in Laza Village with local hospitality and taste traditional Lezgi and Azerbaijani mountain dishes.

DAY 5: Laza → Yergikek Village

After breakfast, the trek begins from Laza Village. The trail extends along the Shahdag side ridge towards Yergikek Village. Along the way, mesmerizing views of Gizilqaya and Mykhtoken ridges, mountain streams, and green valleys make the hike more enjoyable. By the end of the day, we reach Yergikek Village, experiencing village life and the local mountain lifestyle. In the evening, relax around the village and enjoy the calm mountain scenery and local cuisine. Overnight at the guesthouse.

DAY 6: Yergikek → Kukur Village → Baku

After breakfast, the trek continues from Yergikek Village. This part of the hike is calm and rich in natural scenery. Moving along the mountain slopes, you will see the deep valleys of Kukur and the distant Shahdag range. Along the way, we encounter meadows, small springs, and village pastures. By midday, we reach Kukur Village and then depart for Baku after lunch.
